Julie Hurd’s inspiration is her love for cooking, but her motivation has always been her customers.

After getting her culinary arts degree, Julie realized that becoming a chef at a restaurant sometimes means giving up creative liberty in the kitchen. It became her dream to open her own space where she could push the boundaries of food. And what better experiments to have than with everyone’s favorite dessert?

Julie has taken several classes around the country that taught her how to make and build a business around plant-based ice créme. She opened Columbia City’s only plant-based ice créme shop in November 2020.

In addition to plant-based ice créme, Moo Over also serves dairy-free, gluten-free, nut-free, allergy-friendly, non-GMO, dye-free pastries for those with other allergies and intolerances.

One of Julie’s biggest motivators is her customer base, who may not have access to delicious desserts that don’t cause hours and hours of stomach issues.

In fact, Moo Over has served children with lactose intolerance the first bowl of ice créme they’ve ever had. Julie’s creations have also allowed people with gluten and nut intolerances to enjoy a cinnamon roll after not being able to indulge for years.

To say the least, Moo Over is sweetening up Columbia City.

Julie hopes Moo Over will continue being an accessible place for anyone to pick up a sweet treat for her community, helping families make memories along the way. She will continue to practice and refine new flavors and creations.

With the $500 Grant, Julie will be able to purchase tools that will make creating her delicious, refreshing, and creamy ice créme that much easier.
